UN: It Is Time For Iran To Stop Growing Wave Of Executions

The Supreme Commissioner of the United Nations (UN) on Human Rights Folker Turk said that he was deeply concerned about death sentences in Iran, the number of which has increased significantly over the past year.

In his written statement, the Turk noted that in 2024 at least 901 people were executed in Iran, in 2023 this figure was 853 people.

Having emphasized that the number of people sentenced to death in Iran is growing every year, the Turk added: “I am deeply concerned about mortal sentences in Iran, which have increased significantly last year. It’s time to stop the growing wave of executions.”

According to him, most decisions about execution in 2024 were made for crimes related to drugs, the Turk attracted attention to the fact that the number of executed women also increased.

“We are opposed to the death penalty under any circumstances, this is incompatible with the main right to life and creates an unacceptable risk of execution of innocent people,” the politician wrote.

The Turk urged the Iranian authorities to stop all executions and cancel this punishment method.
