This year will become a record for an increase in world energy capacities due to renewable energy sources (VIE).
About this, referring to the data of the International Agency for renewable energy sources, said UN Secretary General Antoniu Guterres.
Speaking at the virtual meeting of the Petersberg climate dialogue, Antoniu Gutherrish said that the renequisy amounted to more than 92 percent of all the new generating capacities installed last year, and their volume exceeds the total electric power of Brazil and Japan combined.
renewable production capacities of Europe increased by nine percent, while Germany provided more than a quarter of this growth. Africa potential has grown by almost seven percent.
“All this is another reminder of the truth of the 21st century: renewable energy sources are an updated economy. They stimulate growth, create jobs, reduce electricity accounts and purify the air,” said the General Secretary.
According to Antoniu Guterris, since 2010 the average cost of wind energy fell by 60 percent, and the sunny one became 90 cheaper. In 2023, the sector of pure energy accounted for five percent of economic growth in India and six in the United States. He accounts for a fifth of GDP China GDP and a third of the GDP of the European Union.
Despite these successes, the Secretary General noted, climatic problems are accumulating in the world. Last week, the World Meteorological Organization confirmed that in 2024, almost every climatic indicator reached new, more dangerous heights, which led to the movement of the population, a decrease in food security and huge economic losses. For the first time, the global average annual temperature was 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than in pre -industrial times.
“Scientists are unambiguously said: to meet the long -term limit of 1.5 degrees is still possible, – the general secretary emphasized, but this requires urgent actions. We can achieve this goal only with closer cooperation – between the governments, as well as between society and the production sectors. We are at the turning point. I urge you to use this moment.”
Petersberg dialogue is an annual forum for political discussions at a high level. During the event, the main attention is paid to international negotiations on climatic and practical implementation of measures to combat climate change.
