The catastrophic position of the civilian population of Sudan has only worsened in recent weeks.
This was warned by the representative of the Coordination Office of Humanitarian issues (VSGV) Eden Vororn, speaking on behalf of the UN Emergency Coordinator and Deputy Secretary General of Tom Fletcher at a meeting of the Security Council.
According to her, more than 12 million inhabitants of Sudan were forced to leave their homes, of which 3.4 million fled to neighboring countries. More than half of the Sudanese population – 24.6 million people – is starving, said the representative of the UN UN.
According to briefing, eight months after the resolution by the Security Council, the resolution 2736 Civilians in North Darfur are still attacked. Violence in the area of the camp of the Zastsam, in which, according to estimates, hundreds of thousands of civilians remain and where the conditions of mass hunger were confirmed, intensified even more.
Vorona said that on Monday, the organization “Doctors without Borders”, which provides in the camp the service in the field of health and food, announced a forced suspension of its activities due to a deterioration in security situation.
The representative of the VSGV noted that last year about 15.6 million people received humanitarian support throughout Sudan.
However, according to her, the lack of security and active hostilities, bureaucratic obstacles and other difficulties continue to undermine the efforts of humanitarian organizations.
The speaker recalled that to help the inhabitants of Sudan and Sudanese refugees in 2025 will need a record amount of $ 6 billion.
“As we have already said, the scale of the needs of Sudan is unprecedented and require the same unprecedented mobilization of international support, including flexible financing,” she emphasized.
Safety Council and all member states, which may affect the situation, take immediate measures to ensure compliance with all parties to international humanitarian law.
It is also necessary in practice to fulfill obligations to facilitate humanitarian access to those in need, the UN representative added.
