The UN Secretary General Antoniu Gutherrish called on the participants of all armed conflicts on Earth to put a weapon in the spirit of the Olympic truce.

The corresponding statement was made in a video message that Antoniu Guterierh timed to the upcoming opening of the Summer Olympic Games in Paris, the UN press service reports.

According to the head of the UN, these days and weeks it is necessary to bring bridges, strengthen solidarity and strive for the ultimate goal – the world for everyone.

“The world has gathered in Paris to glorify the power of sports in order to give hope to unite cultures and people, as well as promote mutual respect and honest rules of the game. All this is also the ideals of the United Nations,” the message says.

GUERRISH wished the Olympians and Paralympians of all kinds of success. “You inspire us to dream of more,” he added. “Let the Olympic fire illuminate the path to peace and harmony.”

The tradition of the Olympic truce dates back to the 9th century BC, when, in accordance with the prediction of the Delphic oracle, the perch and wars were discontinued in ancient Greece, as a result of which the city of Peloponnese was destroyed, and the competitions of athletes from warring tribes were carried out. years later, other Greek tribes joined the Pelopone Treaty on holding the Olympic Games. Initially, the purpose of the cessation of wars during the Olympiad was to ensure the possibility of all athletes to get to the venue of the competition and take part in them. The UN General Assembly has revived the ancient Greek tradition of Ekeheery (Olympic truce) in 1993.
