UN Secretary General: G20 Countries Should Lead Efforts To Solve Global Problems

UN Secretary General Antoniu Guterres called on the leaders of the largest economies of the planet to activate efforts to ensure peace, combat climate change, reform international financial institutions and ensure universal access to new technologies.

This was the head of the World Organization, on the eve of the Summit of the Twenty Group (G20) summit in Rio de Janeiro.

“I came to Rio with a simple message: the leaders of the” big twenty “should take on a leading role. The countries of the” big twenty “are in determination have great economic power and significant diplomatic influence. They should use them to solve key world problems” , said Gutherrish at a press conference.

The General Secretary emphasized the need to accelerate the fight against the main global challenges, including the climatic crisis, armed conflicts, the growing inequality and stagnation in the fight against poverty. “Our inability to cope with these challenges undermines people’s trust in governments and international institutions,” he said.

One of the main priorities was called the Secretary General to ensure peace in the hot spots of the world – in Gaza, Lebanon, Ukraine and Sudan.

“The world requires actions based on the UN Charter, the rule of law and the principles of sovereignty, political independence and territorial integrity of states,” he said.

Speaking of international finances, Gutherrish drew attention to the vulnerable countries that are faced with difficulties that are independent of themselves. The existing financial architecture is “outdated”, it is “ineffective and unfair,” he emphasized.

The climatic crisis has become another key topic of performance. Now it is very important to establish a high goal on climatic financing, which will help developing countries to cope with challenges, he said.

According to the Secretary General, the current climatic policy of the countries of the world can lead to a catastrophic increase in temperature by 3.1 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, however, according to the Parisian climate agreement, it is necessary to withhold temperature increase in the range of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The countries of the “big twenty”, which account for 80 percent of world emissions, are obliged to become leaders in this process, said Guterrish.

One of the final points of the head of the UN was to ensure universal access to new technologies. The Secretary General noted the adoption of a global digital agreement, which includes the first universal agreements for managing artificial intelligence (AI).

The world is faced with many problems, but solutions exist, the UN head said. According to him, the “big twenty” should be an example and restore trust in the international system.

“We are obliged to use every opportunity for transforming actions for the sake of a safe, peaceful and stable world,” he concluded.
