The UN Human Rights Office published a report on the persecution of Uyghurs in Sinjiang, the publication of which was postponed for several months. It was posted on the official website of the organization.
It is noteworthy that the report was published a few minutes before the end of the four -year term of office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michel Bachalet.
The document states that China authorities committed “serious violations” of human rights in the Xinjiang-Uygur Autonomous Region of China as part of measures to combat terrorism and extremism. The UN called these actions against Uyghurs and Muslims a crime against humanity.
The conclusions of the report said that Chinese anti -terrorist legislation is “deeply problematic” from the point of view of international human rights standards and allowed the authorities to carry out large -scale arbitrary repressions against Uyghurs and other Muslims of the region.
Beijing rejected these accusations. “Sinjiang reigns social stability, economic development, cultural prosperity and religious harmony, people of all ethnic groups live a happy life in peace and contentment. Attempts by the United States, Western countries and anti -Chinese forces use the UN as a cover for manipulating problems associated with Sinjiang, doomed to failure, ”said Liu Yuin, press secretary of the perpetuity of China.
PRC authorities claim that a campaign against misinformation and lies fabricated by anti -Chinese forces is being conducted against them.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights spoke about plans to release a report on the situation in Xinjiang since December 2021, recalls The New York Times. Since then, the publication has been postponed several times, for which human rights activists criticized the office. Before the end of the term of office, the Bachelet said that she was faced with “incredible pressure [with demands] to publish or not publish a report,” BBC News reports.
