Press release: UN Women launches first-ever National Committee in Spain
UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous welcomed the announcement: “UN Women appreciates the support of Spanish people to the empowerment of women and gender equality, as signalled by the establishment of the UN Women National Committee in Spain. I welcome this excellent news and look forward to the strong contribution that I am confident this new National Committee will make to the fulfilment of the rights of women and girls in the world.”
At a launch event taking place today in Madrid, Spain, the Chair of the UN Women National Committee there, Ewa Widlak, outlined its main objectives. The new national committee will implement public awareness campaigns that promote changes in public policies and discourse with the objective of advancing gender equality and ending gender discrimination and stereotypes.
It will also support the continued strengthening of relations between UN Women and the Spanish government, as well as raise funds for the implementation of UN Women programmes around the world.
“It is up to the entire society to continue acting to end the violence and discrimination women and girls face,” said Ms. Widlak. “The National Committee’s mission is to pursue greater parity and equality: in positions of responsibility in public institutions and companies, in the equitable distribution of care and household responsibilities, or in access to same educational and professional opportunities.”
