The United States considers the possibility of building small modular nuclear reactors in a number of countries, including in Armenia. This was reported by the coordinator of the assistance programs of the State Department of the United States to Europe and Eurasia Maria Longi.
“In a number of countries, including in Armenia, we evaluate the possibility of installing small modular nuclear reactors under construction using American technologies and capable of leading to greater energy independence both from Russia and China,” Longgs said, speaking at hearings in the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives of the US Congress.
Armenia satisfies most of its energy needs due to import from Russia.
About 40 percent of electricity in the country produces a Mesemory nuclear power plant located near the Turkish border.
