The US Presidential Advisor Mike Waltz said that the abolition of an exception for Iraq to the import of natural gas from Iran is associated with the “maximum pressure” policy on Tehran.
According to the press service of the Cabinet of Ministers of Iraq, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiya Al-Sudani held a telephone conversation with Waltz, during which they discussed the abolition of exclusion, which allowed Iraq to import gas from Iran for electricity production.
Waltz emphasized that the abolition of this exception is directly related to the policy of “maximum pressure” to Iran. He also noted the importance of further coordination between the United States and Iraq to prevent possible negative consequences for Iraq stability.
Iraq Prime Minister, in turn, confirmed the intention to expand economic relations with the United States and called on American companies to invest in the developing Iraq market.
Earlier, the US Army in Baghdad Daniel Rubinstein said that Iranian gas imports did not fall under American sanctions. However, the United States canceled the exception that allowed Iraq to pay for the supply of Iranian gas for electricity.
The press secretary of the Iraqi government Basim al-Avvadi noted that the country’s authorities consider all possible scenarios in case the exclusion is not extended.
