The US State Department satisfied the official request of Turkey to change the name of the republic in official documents, said the head of the press service of the State Department Ned Price.
Now, in the official documents of the State Department, instead of the traditional Turkey name for English, the word Türkiye (“Turkic”) will use – this is how the name of the country is pronounced in Turkish.
“I can confirm that the Turkish embassy requested that we use this spelling in our official documents,” said Price.
He added that the change was approved by the authorized body of the US Federal Government, responsible for the standardization of writing geographical names.
“The decision was finally approved this morning and implemented in practice this morning,” Price confirmed.
According to him, the State Department will use the new spelling of the name of the republic in most cases in the official diplomatic context and in bilateral communication, including in messages for the public.
“However, the usual name can also be used if it contributes to a better understanding among the general public,” said Price.
In June 2022, the UN granted a similar official request to Turkey to change the name of the Republic in all official documents in foreign languages.
