USA and European Union: an hour before invasion, Russia arranged a cyber attack on Ukraine

The European Union, the UK, the United States and their allies accused Russia of involvement in the Kiberataka on the KA-SAT satellite network, which is managed by Viasat. Information about Russia’s involvement in the incident was received by the special services of Great Britain and the USA, Medusa reports.

According to Western countries, the attack began on the night of February 24, 2022, an hour before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The actions of hackers were directed against the Ukrainian military, but led to large -scale consequences, including outside Ukraine.

“Kiberataka led to serious consequences, causing mass communication failures in a number of Ukrainian state bodies and enterprises, as well as among local users and affecting several EU member states,” said the Supreme Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Zhosep Borrel.

According to the UK, the attack led to interruptions in the Internet from several thousand customers from Ukraine, and also affected wind power plants and Internet users in Central Europe. The US State Department says that the actions of hackers have disabled satellite communications in Ukraine and “throughout Europe.” Viasat in March reported that the attack on February 24 affected several thousand customers in Ukraine and tens of thousands in Europe.

The USA believes that Russia began subversive cyberoperations against Ukraine in January 2022 and continued them during the war.

Representatives of Russia have not yet commented on these accusations.
