US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan commented on the establishment of control of Aleppo by the opposition forces of Syria in an interview with CNN.
“The opposition drew attention to three actors who had put pressure on them for years: Iran, Russia and Hezbollah. Now they see them weakened and vulnerable and try to use it,” Sullivan noted.
According to him, the swiftness of attacks was a surprise to the Syrian regime and regional observers. Sullivan added that these events, along with the situation in Ukraine, are the result of weakening the strategic positions of Russia and Iran.
Commenting on possible risks for American troops in Syria, Sullivan said: “Our forces deployed to combat DeASH are in another region, so there are no direct threat from these attacks. However, they are still in threat from Shiite groups In Iran, Iraq and Syria.
Sullivan emphasized that the United States continues to anxiously monitor the development of events. He recalled that Washington classifies the armed group Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), opposing the Syrian regime, as a “terrorist organization”, and expressed fears for its goals and intentions.
Nevertheless, Sullivan noted that the United States will not object to the pressure of opposition forces on supported by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah Bashar al -Assad, especially in their advancement to Damascus.
He called the situation “complex” and said that Washington continues to actively interact with regional partners.
