The United States does not strive to curl up trade ties with China and the economic demarcation with Beijing. At the same time, Washington will maintain a rigid export control regime regarding Beijing. This was stated by US Presidential Assistant Jake Sullivan, speaking at the Brookings Institute.
According to him, export restrictions concern only a number of critical sectors, and not economic relations in general. “We do not break off the connections with China, but reduce the risks. Exporting control is narrowly focused on technologies that can violate military balance. We want to make sure that the technology of the United States and their allies will not be used against us,” Sullivan said.
Assistant to the head of the White House noted that recently the chairman of the European Commission Ursula von der Layen indicated the need to reduce the risks of economic dependence in relations with China.
The United States agreed with their European allies to reduce risks and that this approach is necessary to create effective and stable supply chains and prevent economic difficulties, he emphasized.
Sullivan attracted attention to the fact that the United States did not refuse to trade with the PRC, bilateral trade between the two countries reached a record volume last year.
At the same time, he openly admitted that the United States is competing with China in many areas. “However, we do not strive to confront or conflict. We strive to be responsible to manage competition, strive to work with China on the issues that we can,” said the adviser to the American leader.
Sullivan believes that both countries can protect the interests of our national security and at the same time ensure healthy economic competition, but for this China must contribute.
The United States established a new economic order in the divided world after the Second World War, and this order contributed to the technical progress and prosperity in the USA and in many parts of the world, but a number of events of recent years revealed cracks in this order, he added.
