WHO: Africa on threshold of third wave of Covid-19

Africa was on the threshold of the third wave of coronavirus, over the past two weeks the number of newly ill covid-19 on the continent increased by 20% compared with the previous same period. This was announced on Thursday, the head of the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa Mathido Moethy, whose performance was published on the official portal of the service, reports Trend with reference to TASS.

“The threat of a third wave in Africa is real, and it increases,” said Moeth. – The priority is to accelerate the vaccination of the inhabitants of Africa, which are subject to the risk of the disease. “

Moethy noted that the tendency to an increase in the number of new infected people is noted in 14 African countries. At the same time, in eight of them there is a rapid increase – up to 30% – the number of patients. Among them are South Africa, Uganda, Angola, Namibia. “The growth of morbidity coincided with the slowdown in the supply of vaccine to African countries,” said the representative of WHO. – At the same time, most of the states of the continent have already spent two-thirds of their vaccine stocks from COVID-19. “

According to WHO, 48.6 million doses of vaccine from coronavirus received for the current day of Africa, from which 31.4 million doses are used. “In Africa, about 2% of the population received at least one dose of the vaccine from COVID-19, although this figure is now 24% for the whole world,” Moeth said. As a result, according to her, although Africa accounts for 2.9% of all registered cases of the disease in the world, the continent accounts for 3.7% of all deaths caused by COVID-19.

In Africa, 4,843,59 sick crownavirus were revealed, 130,635 people died. The largest number of infected is registered in South Africa, then Morocco, Tunisia, Ethiopia and Egypt.
