Pandemic stroke shows that new variants of coronavirus may appear, which will be more resistant to existing vaccines. This was stated by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adan Greesusus, speaking on Friday by video links in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (PMEF), reports TASS.
“The mortality from the Coronavirus caused disease COVID-19 remains high all over the world. The more the virus circulates, the higher the probability that its new options will appear, which will make vaccines less efficient and throw us back,” said the head of WHO.
He also stressed that all countries need to continue vaccination campaigns.
“I urge all countries to support global vaccination efforts and ensure the preparation of at least 10% of the population of each country by September and 30% of the population – by the end of the year,” added WHO CEO.
He also recalled that in November a special meeting of the World Health Assembly will be held, in which WHO member countries may adopt a fight against pandemic. Its approval “will strengthen regional and global health opportunities.”
