Thanks to the vaccines introduced in Africa in 2023, at least 1 million 800 thousand lives were saved. This was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO).
In the statement of the WHO regional department for Africa countries, it is noted that such diseases as measles, polio and cervical cancer were largely prevented in African countries thanks to the campaigns conducted by the governments with the support of the global alliance on vaccines and immunization (Gavi), the UN children’s fund (UNICEF) and WHO
Deputy Regional Director of the WHO for Africa Country Chikveeza emphasized that there is a significant decrease in the number of poliomyelitis cases.
“Cases of poliomyelitis are significantly reduced, but the number of children in the region that do not have access to vaccines, and the ongoing outbreaks of the disease are still a significant problem. We have achieved great progress in vaccination, but we still have to go a long way. We must invest in vaccination for the sake of a strong future,” he said.
According to Ihekweazu, 5 million children were vaccinated as part of a campaign planned for 2024.
Imekway noted that thanks to the VPV vaccine, many young girls were able to avoid cervical cancer.
In addition, he stated that Africa reached second place in the world in vaccination against HPV.
