Most of the victims as a result of flooding in Libya could be prevented due to a in -way warning made through the modern system of early warning (BCP). This opinion was expressed by the General Secretary of the World Meteorological Organization (VMO) Peteri Taalas, presenting a report on a briefing in the UN Geneva Office, dedicated to the topic of climate change and sustainable development goals.
According to the Secretary General, the flood also affected the economic component.
“Of course, we cannot completely prevent economic losses, but we can minimize them by providing appropriate services (through early warning systems),” said Taalas.
Daniel Cyclone fell to the north-east of Libya on September 10 and brought a stormy wind and strong rains with thunderstorms located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Government of the National Unity of Libya reported that 6 thousand people were killed as a result of the flood, another thousand were missing.
