Twenty -five skipels will participate in scientific research and observations of the ocean during the largest single -loser non -stop regatta of Vende Globe 2024. This is stated on the website of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
Sailors strive to promote oceanographic research and weather forecasting, using scientific devices provided by the World Meteorological Organization (ICO) on board the United Nations on Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) and their scientific partners.
Cooperation between scientists and sailors will contribute to the collection and distribution of real time of important data among users around the world, including the ocean temperature, atmospheric pressure and concentration of dissolved carbon dioxide in remote areas with insufficient meteorological data.
This will help to better understand the change in climate, improve weather forecasts and support early warning systems, as well as evaluate the state of ocean and marine ecosystems.
Skipers will use a wide range of scientific equipment, including drifting surface buoys, weather stations, mini-oceanographic laboratories and much more designed to collect the most important meteorological data.
devices provided by large scientific institutions and agencies, such as Météo-France, UK Met Office, Ifremer, CNES, Geomar, Tara Foundation and Eth Zürich, are equipped with advanced technologies.
The data collected during and after the regatta will be used in the global Ocean observation system, which is supported and coordinated by Oceanops, a joint center for advanced experience, created by VMO and UNESCO. Regata “Vendee Globe 2024” starts on November 10 in the Frenchman Le-Sable-D’olone.
In the framework of the training, 25 sailors went through special training and received scientific equipment at a two -day seminar on October 22 and 23 at the start site. This cooperation between the skills and Oceanops is part of the Odyssey project, launched in 2021 in support of the decade of UN Oceanology in the interests of sustainable development in 2021-2030. This initiative is aimed at structuring and recognition of the contribution of civil society, the private sector and sailors, including participants in the marine races, in monitoring the ocean.
