Yerevan: Number Of Russian Border Guards On Border With Turkey Was Not Excluded In Yerevan

The number of Russian border guards on the border of Armenia with Turkey can be reduced. This was stated by the local media by Armenia Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

According to him, this may happen if the Armenian-Turkish border is opened.

“If there will be confidence between Armenia and Turkey, an open border, then we can consider and discuss this issue,” the words of the diplomat are given.

At the same time, Mirzoyan noted that Russian border guards both on the border with Turkey and Iran, and on the checkpoint of the Zvartnots airport were placed on a temporary basis, until Armenia has the opportunity to independently carry out service.

According to the minister, the issue of withdrawal from Armenia of the 102nd Russian military base is currently not on the agenda.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting in Moscow in October 2024 agreed on a number of issues on the protection of the state border of Armenia.

“The agreement was reached that from January 1, 2025 the border troops of the SNB of Armenia will also participate in the protection of the state borders of Armenia-Iran and Armenia-Turisia, and the service at the control and borderline of the state border of Armenia-Iran will be fully carried out by the border troops forces SNB of Armenia “”, – spokesman for the Prime Minister of Armenia Nazeli Baghdasaryan based on the results of negotiations.

According to this message, Pashinyan thanked Putin for the service of the Border Troops of the FSB of Russia at the state border control center between the Republic of Armenia and the Islamic Republic of Iran from the moment of the Armenia gained independence.

Since January 2025, border guards of the Russian Federation stopped serving at the Agarurak checkpoint on the border of Armenia with Iran.

On August 1, 2024, representatives of the Border Service of the FSB of Russia completed the service at the Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan.

Representatives of the FSB border control of the Russian Federation, together with the border guards of the National Security Service of the Republic of Armenia, protect the borders of the country with Turkey and Iran on the basis of an agreement of 1992.
