Zurabishvili In European Parliament Called For New Elections In Georgia

During her speech in the European Parliament on December 18, Salome Zurabishvili announced the need to hold new elections in Georgia and “more active support for the European Union.”

According to her, the parliamentary elections on October 26 were “falsified on a large scale.”

The politician accused the ruling party “Georgian Dream” of “full control over the Central Election Commission”, which, according to her, became possible thanks to the ignoring the recommendations of the European Union and amending the election Code.

Salome Zurabishvili announced a deterioration in Georgia after the election on October 26 and drew attention to the “accelerated movement towards Russia” and “systematic violation of democratic norms”. She condemned the “unconstitutional convocation of parliament without the approval of the president and without consideration by the Constitutional Court of complaints related to the elections.”

Zurabishvili criticized the “unilateral” decision of Prime Minister Irakli Kobahidze on the suspension of the process of integration in the EU and called it a violation of the constitution and the “suspension of the European future Georgia”.

A 300 election collegium on December 14 chose the new president of Georgia deputy of the parliament from the ruling party “Georgian Dream”, Mikhail Kavelashvili.

Salome Zurabishvili said that she does not recognize the legitimacy of today’s elections. She announced that she did not intend to leave the post of president of the country and transfer the powers of Kavelashvili.
